A Number of Injured as Turbulence Strikes A Delta Airlines Flight into Sydney, Australia
A number of individuals have been injured following a Delta Airlines aircraft traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney was hit by turbulence Friday morning.
The flight, numbered 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, a company official told. A number of the onboard staff required medical attention.
Emergency medical services said they treated a total of five people, and took three of them to the hospital with relatively minor issues that included spinal discomfort and migraines. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.
The event represents the most recent case of aircraft being hit by severe turbulence, with aviation specialists saying that global warming is a significant contributor.
On board were 245 people and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the official noted, adding that the plane touched down "safely and normally" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.
The NSW Ambulance Service said they received a call just three minutes before the plane touched down, and response teams were standing by on the runway.
