RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
